The bank is preparing a professional custody offer and is considering Asian expansion. At the heart of the service: key and authorization management.

The proposed service

Deutsche Bank is preparing a crypto asset custody offer in Germany and is considering an expansion to Asian financial hubs in 2027. The first cities concerned have not been specified. To understand this announcement, it is necessary to distinguish between three functions: holding an asset, authorizing its transfer, and organizing its exchange.

The offer presented by the bank is aimed at companies and institutional investors. It provides for the custody and transfer of bitcoin, ether, and certain stablecoins. The bank would manage the wallets and private keys for its clients, within the scope of the announced service.

Keys and controls

This delegation changes the way access is controlled. A wallet is an interface that allows you to view an account and prepare operations. The assets remain registered in the registry of their blockchain. They are not moved to an application like files copied to a computer.

The address allows you to identify a destination; the private key is used to produce a signature authorizing an operation. Knowing an address is therefore not enough to spend the corresponding funds. Entrusting keys to a service provider is a conservation choice that is distinct from personal management, with different recovery modalities.

Deutsche Bank describes several levels of protection: specialized hardware, separation of responsibilities, validations involving multiple people, and backup devices. These measures apply to access and operations. They do not stabilize the bitcoin exchange rate and do not make all crypto assets equivalent to a guaranteed bank deposit.

The calendar, accepted assets, and effective access to the service remain parameters to be followed separately. A geographical expansion perspective does not, on its own, specify the conditions offered to clients. The concrete challenge is the organization of conservation: who controls the signatures, who validates the movements, and what procedures allow access to be recovered after a technical incident?

Custody is one part of the market

A custody offering must be distinguished from trading, lending and payment services. One institution can provide several of these functions, but they meet different needs. Holding keys and governing signatures does not automatically establish where assets can be sold or on what terms. The bank's announced scope therefore needs to be read function by function, rather than through the broad label of a crypto service. The organisation responsible for safekeeping is not necessarily the only participant involved in a customer's eventual transaction.

Imagine an organisation requesting a transfer from a wallet held by a provider. Preparing the request, obtaining internal approval and executing it on the network are separate stages. Institutional controls may concern the first stages, while blockchain rules determine how the transaction is accepted. A procedural delay and a confirmation delay therefore describe different constraints, even when presented as one customer journey. Understanding those stages helps distinguish an access arrangement from the operation of the underlying asset or network.

Conditions still to be specified

An announcement of future availability does not replace the terms that will apply when the service opens. Supported networks, covered assets, incident procedures and the treatment of technical changes all help define the offering. The same family of tokens can circulate across several infrastructures with different conditions. Assessing this project consequently involves the operational organisation that will actually be available, alongside the names of the assets and the prospect of international expansion. The geographic plan and the working conditions of the custody service provide connected but different information.
