Wallet, Address, and Keys: Who Controls Crypto Assets?

A wallet provides access to accounts on a blockchain. The address allows receiving, and the keys serve to authorize certain actions. The assets remain registered in the network's registry.

Addresses and keys

A wallet is an interface that allows interaction with accounts on a blockchain. It displays balances, prepares transactions, and helps to authorize them. Crypto assets are not stored in the phone like photos: the information that allows them to be held and transferred remains in the network's registry.

02How it works

The address plays the role of destination identifier. It can be communicated to receive a payment on the appropriate network. The private key fulfills another function: it allows producing a signature that authorizes an operation. Sharing an address therefore does not mean giving a private key, even if this address can reveal a public history.

Signing and custody

03Key points to remember

The comparison with a mailbox helps to distinguish the roles: the address indicates where to send, while a secret allows action. The operation varies. Some accounts rely on multiple signatures or contracts, with specific rules. Not all wallets are therefore limited to a single key kept by one person.

In a wallet where the user controls their keys, the protection and recovery of these accesses fall to them. A hardware device can isolate secrets and sign transactions without exposing them to the computer. However, it does not understand human intentions: authorizing a malicious operation is still possible if a deceptive request is validated.

On a platform that holds assets for its clients, the company manages the keys and the user accesses a service account. The withdrawal and recovery conditions are then different. Finally, seeing a token appear in an interface does not prove its authenticity. The network, destination address, and contract identity are distinct information to verify. Understanding who holds the keys and what a signature authorizes allows knowing which control mechanism each operation is entrusted to.

Understanding the Control of Crypto Assets The crypto assets remain registered in the network's registry. A wallet provides access to accounts on a blockchain. The address allows receiving, and the keys serve to authorize certain actions.

Look at what a wallet authorises

A wallet can be understood as a dashboard connected to a signing mechanism. It reads public information, constructs a request and, depending on its design, obtains the authorisation needed to proceed. A signing secret is not equivalent to a website login name. A public address can be used for receiving or viewing; it is different from the ability to authorise a transfer. These roles remain distinct even when an application brings them together on the same screen for convenience.

Consider an application requesting a wallet connection. That connection generally identifies an address, but does not by itself authorise the movement of every asset. A message signature, a contract approval and a transaction are different actions. The screen must be interpreted in relation to the specific request. A familiar website name or a recognised logo does not establish which powers are actually granted during an interaction. The substance of the permission matters as well as the appearance of the service.

Understand custody and recovery

An application can work with a hardware device, a secret held on a phone or a service managing access for the user. These models answer backup and recovery questions differently. Losing an account password and losing the only information capable of authorising transactions do not necessarily have the same consequences. Understanding a wallet therefore means identifying who controls authorisations, what is backed up and which services continued access depends on. The application name alone cannot describe that entire arrangement.
