Sygnum and Debifi launch MultiSYG, a loan backed by multisignature Bitcoin collateral

Announced on October 23, MultiSYG combines a bank loan with Bitcoin collateral held in a wallet with distributed signing keys. This key arrangement does not remove the risks of borrowing.

Bitcoin collateral with distributed keys

Sygnum and Debifi announced the launch of MultiSYG on October 23, 2026. The arrangement allows eligible clients to borrow against bitcoins held as collateral in a dedicated multisignature wallet. The keys are distributed between the client, Sygnum Bank and independent institutional keyholders, according to the partners' announcement.

This arrangement does not mean that the borrower hands all private keys over to the bank. Nor does it mean that the borrower alone retains the ability to move the pledged bitcoins. The principle is to distribute signing powers, under conditions that need to be understood before collateral is locked.

Multisignature protects a transfer, not the price

In Bitcoin, the rules attached to funds determine the signatures needed to spend them. A multisignature mechanism requires a combination of authorized signatures. An isolated key is therefore not necessarily sufficient to transfer the assets, unlike a wallet relying on a single controlling key.

According to Sygnum, each collateral position remains in a separate wallet that can be checked on the blockchain. This transparency can help the client observe that the funds are present. However, it does not grant freedom to withdraw them contrary to the credit agreement: the purpose of collateral is precisely to secure repayment to the lender.

Borrowing without selling creates a debt

The service aims to provide liquidity while retaining exposure to Bitcoin. This difference from a sale is essential: the borrower keeps an asset whose market value fluctuates and simultaneously takes on a debt, together with the interest and obligations set out in the agreement.

If the collateral's value falls, the ratio between the amount borrowed and that value rises. Depending on the applicable rules, additional collateral, partial repayment or liquidation may become necessary. Signature security does not resolve this economic risk. A wallet that is difficult to steal from can still secure a loan that has become insufficiently collateralized.

Read the credit and custody conditions

Sygnum presents asset segregation and off-balance-sheet treatment as features of its custody framework. These statements describe the bank's arrangement; they should not be turned into universal insurance against every loss or an identical guarantee in every jurisdiction or credit situation.

Useful questions concern fees, interest, collateral thresholds, keyholders and the procedure for returning funds after repayment. Recovery mechanisms if a key becomes unavailable also need to be understood. A brand name or the word multisignature does not replace these details.

MultiSYG thus illustrates how native Bitcoin functions can be used in a banking service. The innovation concerns how collateral and signatures are organized. It adds no automatic yield to the bitcoins held and does not turn a secured loan into a risk-free transaction.
