Bitwise highlights crypto adoption without turning scenarios into certainties
Bitwise's quarterly review describes a rebound in markets and several crypto uses. A note by Matt Hougan also presents a favourable long-term view of bitcoin, which remains a manager's opinion rather than a guaranteed forecast.

A quarterly review based on several indicators
Bitwise highlights improvements in several crypto indicators in its review published on 8 October 2026. The document covers the third quarter, even though its title refers to the fourth quarter. This calendar detail is essential: it does not describe performance already achieved over the final three months of the year.
The manager states that its index of the ten largest cryptoassets gained 46.39% over the period studied. It also estimates inflows into spot Bitcoin products at approximately six billion dollars, including $3.5 billion in August. These figures combine a price movement and capital flows, two measurements that must continue to be distinguished.
The report also highlights growth in tokenised equities and activity in decentralised perpetual contract markets. For Bitwise, the significance of these developments lies in diversifying uses beyond purchasing cryptocurrencies in the hope of price appreciation. The figures nevertheless remain tied to the categories and methods used in its study.
A favourable view of bitcoin from an investment manager
In a separate note dated 14 October, Matt Hougan, Bitwise's chief investment officer, examines several possible economic paths involving artificial intelligence and interest rates. His thesis is that they could support bitcoin over the long term through different routes.
He considers, among other possibilities, a more productive economy placing greater value on scarce assets, an economic shock followed by a response from the authorities, or a gradual continuation of adoption. This line of reasoning is an expression of the investment conviction held by the author, rather than an observation of outcomes that have already occurred. The public interventions and market reactions discussed are neither decided nor guaranteed by the existence of the note.
Hougan also acknowledges that some scenarios may begin with a decline in bitcoin and that other risks could undermine his thesis. His analysis should therefore not be summarised as a promise of uninterrupted price increases. Bitwise itself manages crypto products: that position forms part of the context in which the note should be read.
Adoption, exposure and returns are different things
Growing usage can strengthen interest in infrastructure without ensuring proportional appreciation in every associated token. A holder's outcome also depends on the entry price, asset chosen, fees and duration of exposure. An indicator covering the sector as a whole does not directly describe the actual performance achieved by the particular assets in that holder's own portfolio.
The same distinction applies to listed products. Their exposure objective, legal structure and charges influence the result obtained. Easier access to bitcoin through a brokerage account does not eliminate fluctuations in the underlying asset; it changes holding arrangements and the operational risks that need to be examined.
Reading these publications therefore benefits from separating dated findings from interpretations and scenarios. The third quarter provides observations on prices, flows and uses. Hougan's note offers a possible explanation of how they might develop further. Assessing what follows will require comparing that explanation with new data rather than treating a favourable review as certainty about the end of the year.
