Bitcoin Core accelerates fixes for vulnerabilities easily rediscoverable with AI
Bitcoin Core's security policy provides for rapid patch versions for easily discoverable vulnerabilities. The change concerns their handling and disclosure, without in itself signaling a new attack.

A policy adapted to rediscovery
Bitcoin Core is evolving the handling of vulnerabilities that are easy to discover or rediscover. The official policy provides for publishing patch versions quickly for maintained branches when this qualification applies. The discussion led by developer Antoine Poinsot explains that large language models can lower the effort required to spot certain categories of defects or understand a subtle fix. The change concerns the organization of the response to reports; it does not announce, in itself, a general compromise of Bitcoin.
The difficulty lies in the gap between discovering a problem and installing a patched version. Keeping a vulnerability under embargo can leave time for users to prepare, but it protects less when third parties can rediscover it easily. Conversely, publishing exploitation details too early can expose machines that are still vulnerable. The policy seeks to adapt this trade-off to the ease of rediscovery, rather than applying exactly the same schedule to all security reports.
Fixing maintained versions
For problems classified as easy to discover, the mechanism provides for deferring the fix to major versions still maintained and releasing maintenance versions as soon as possible. Security advisories accompany this process according to the published policy. Other vulnerabilities remain treated according to their severity and the planned schedules. The ease of discovery and the impact of a vulnerability are therefore two different criteria: a problem that is simple to spot can have limited or significant consequences.
Maintaining software involves verifying that a correction resolves the problem without introducing a regression. Deferring a change to multiple branches also requires taking their differences into account. The acceleration sought does not mean that all old versions become maintained without limit. Bitcoin Core's official cycle specifies the branches concerned. For an operator, the exact version used and the functions enabled remain necessary to determine whether an advisory applies to their installation.
One software, different situations
Bitcoin Core is software used notably to operate nodes and verify the network rules. A vulnerability can affect a function or a configuration without having the same effects for all users. A node availability issue does not automatically equate to a key theft or arbitrary bitcoin creation. Advisories serve to describe the affected scope and the patched versions, in order to avoid generalizations based solely on the word "vulnerability".
The evolution of the policy also does not constitute an automatic change to Bitcoin's consensus rules. It concerns the management of reports, fixes, and information dissemination. Operators can follow maintained versions and official advisories to understand the actions corresponding to their case. The role of AI in defect research mainly reinforces the importance of the time between discovery, the publication of a reliable fix, and its adoption by installations actually concerned.
