Tether reports $1.5 billion in quarterly operating profit, with reserves attested as of September 30
The October 30 announcement reports a reserve surplus approaching $8 billion. BDO’s report covers a specific snapshot of assets and liabilities, rather than guaranteeing their position at any other time.

Profits and reserves measure different things
Tether published its quarterly attestation concerning Tether International’s reserves on October 30, 2026. The USDT issuer reported $1.5 billion in third-quarter net operating profit and $4.5 billion for the first nine months of the year. It attributed most of that income to U.S. Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements. Those figures describe activity over a period; they should not be confused with the stock of assets available at the reporting date.
As of September 30, reported assets stood at approximately $191.45 billion, compared with $183.50 billion in liabilities. The difference was $7.95 billion. Tether said this buffer had been close to $4.1 billion at the end of the previous quarter. Direct and indirect Treasury bill holdings totaled $132.4 billion, according to its announcement. These are separate indicators: operating income, investment composition, and excess assets each answer a different question about the issuer’s position.
Assurance applies to a specific accounting snapshot
The document signed by BDO Advisory Services on October 30 examines the financial figures and reserves report as of September 30, 2026. The firm concluded that the presentation complied, in all material respects, with the criteria set out in the report. Its procedures included bank confirmations, reconciliations, and sample-based checks. The conclusion therefore provides assurance on a particular document and specified criteria, within an explicit scope, rather than broadly validating every commercial claim made by Tether.
That distinction is essential when reading the announcement. BDO said it had not performed procedures or provided assurance for any other date or time. Management’s supplementary notes are also outside the scope of its opinion. The reserves report is not the company’s complete financial statements. Describing this publication as continuous monitoring, or as certification of every flow during the quarter, would therefore go beyond what the firm says it actually verified.
What the buffer can show
The surplus measures the difference between assets and liabilities using the selected methods at the observed date. It does not necessarily represent that amount in immediately accessible cash. The report specifies that certain investment categories are measured at fair value. Market movements can therefore change their valuation. The buffer is better read alongside the assets supporting it, rather than treated as an isolated number representing unchanging protection for token holders.
BDO also draws attention to valuations based on normal market conditions, which do not necessarily reflect exceptional illiquidity at custodians or counterparties. The announcement documents the position reported for the end of September and the profit claimed for the quarter. It does not establish that liquidity, market, or counterparty risks have disappeared. Assessing subsequent changes will require comparing reports for new dates while preserving consistent definitions and their limitations.
