Xapo sees clients seeking loans and income alongside their bitcoin holdings
In an interview with CoinDesk, Seamus Rocca describes clients wanting to keep their bitcoins while accessing liquidity. Collateralized loans, dollar savings, and credit products address different mechanisms.

An evolution described by the leader
Seamus Rocca, CEO of Xapo Bank, describes bitcoin holders seeking more services around their assets, in an interview published by CoinDesk on October 24. He cites the demand for loans, income, and long-term accumulation. These observations concern the clientele and the experience he presents; they do not constitute a survey representative of all bitcoin holders. They give the point of view of a leader whose institution precisely proposes this type of service.
The change evoked concerns the way to use an asset already held. A client may want to obtain liquidity without immediately selling their bitcoins, or keep dollars while receiving income paid in BTC. These operations do not have the same source of return nor the same risks. The word "income" is therefore not enough to group them into a single product. To understand the offer, it is necessary to identify what is deposited, lent, or given as collateral and the currency in which the obligations are calculated.
Borrowing without selling carries a risk
A loan secured by bitcoins allows receiving funds while maintaining an economic exposure to the asset's price. It nevertheless adds debt and guarantee conditions. If the value of the bitcoins falls, the contract may provide for an additional contribution or a liquidation according to its clauses. The absence of a sale at the start therefore does not eliminate the risk of having to dispose of assets later. The amount borrowed, the interest, and the terms for monitoring the guarantee determine the constraints of the operation.
Holding through an intermediary also introduces a contractual relationship different from autonomous holding. The client depends on the institution's procedures and the rights provided in the agreement. Ease of use does not mean that all operations can be canceled nor that counterparty risks disappear. Banking service, custody arrangement, and credit must thus be examined separately. The value of the bitcoin can vary during the entire duration of the loan, even if the amount received remains expressed in dollars.
Identifying the origin of income
Interest calculated on dollar savings and paid in bitcoins remains linked to the dollar savings product. Payment in BTC does not transform them into native rewards of the Bitcoin network. Conversely, a product that lends cryptoassets depends on the remuneration and repayment of the concerned counterparties. The currency used to pay income and the economic source of that income are two different pieces of information. Confusing them can mask the nature of the risk actually taken.
Rocca presents these needs as a sign of maturity of his clientele. This reading does not guarantee the growth of all services linked to bitcoin nor a future increase in its price. Holders can keep, sell, borrow, or remain in liquidity according to their objectives and their situation. The interview sheds light on a demand for financial services around existing assets; it does not allow deducing a strategy suitable for everyone, nor transforming a commercial objective or a market projection into an assured result.
