Aave raised USDT rates earlier to preserve available liquidity
On Ethereum V3 Core, the USDT curve usage threshold drops from 94% to 92%. The adjustment raises borrowing costs earlier when reserves tighten; it does not block loans beyond this level.

A change on a specific market
Aave modified the USDT rate curve on its Ethereum V3 Core market on October 21, according to the analysis presented by Cointribune. The point at which the borrowing rate increases more sharply shifts from 94% to 92% usage. The modification concerns this reserve and these parameters. It should not be presented as an identical rise across all Aave markets or across all stablecoin loans. Conditions remain tied to the actually observed usage level.
Usage rate expresses the portion of deposited liquidity that is borrowed. When it rises, less funds remain immediately available for withdrawals. The rate curve creates an economic incentive: a higher borrowing cost can curb new demand or encourage repayments. It is not a ceiling that automatically forbids any new borrowing beyond the tipping point. The adjustment acts on the price of credit, according to the protocol's other conditions and limits.
A rate that remains variable
The theoretical rate at 94% usage reaches 7% with the new parameters, against 4.5% previously, according to the calculation reproduced by Cointribune. This result describes a given usage scenario. It does not mean that all borrowers now pay 7% continuously. If the usage level evolves, the calculated rate evolves as well. Comparing the two curves therefore requires keeping the same starting hypothesis rather than comparing readings taken under different conditions.
The cost of a variable-rate debt depends on the rate applied over time and on the duration the position remains open. Annualizing an instantaneous rate allows for comparison, but does not guarantee it will remain identical for a year. On the depositors' side, remuneration also depends on market parameters and does not coincide with the rate charged to borrowers. Lender and borrower therefore do not necessarily observe the same percentage at the same instant.
A theoretical liquidity margin
The change aims to preserve more available liquidity as usage approaches the tipping point. The additional amounts calculated from a given outstanding balance represent a theoretical margin, not an injection of USDT by Aave. For available funds to actually increase, repayments or new deposits are required. A modified parameter can change user incentives; it does not, on its own, create tokens in the reserve and does not guarantee the expected behavior of all participants.
Immediate availability of withdrawals thus depends on the market's actual situation. It must be distinguished from position solvency and the protocol's other risks, guarantees, and the stablecoin. A more prudent curve at a specific point does not eliminate these risks. To track the effect of the adjustment, relevant indicators will be loans, deposits, and actually available liquidity in this reserve. The 92% threshold is a reference point of the rate model, not a promise of yield or unconditional repayment.
