Bitcoin ahead of the Fed's 27–28 October meeting: reference points to watch

The next FOMC meeting is scheduled for 27 and 28 October. Following September's rate increase, markets will watch the decision, inflation arguments and financial conditions without being able to determine bitcoin's reaction in advance.

The next monetary policy meeting is scheduled for late October

The Federal Reserve's official calendar schedules an FOMC meeting for 27 and 28 October 2026. For investors in cryptocurrencies, understanding the significance of this meeting involves more than attempting to guess in advance the figure that will be announced for interest rates. The decision must be read alongside the central bank's reasoning and expectations already reflected in markets.

The latest decision published on the calendar, dated 16 September, raised the federal funds target range by 25 basis points to 3.75–4%. The statement highlighted solid economic activity and still-elevated inflation. This is a documented starting point for understanding the next meeting, rather than an advance announcement of its outcome.

The September minutes also show that monetary policy expectations, bond yields and financing conditions were discussed together. They are a reminder that several markets react to the same economic information without necessarily moving in the same direction or with the same intensity.

Rates influence allocation decisions without setting bitcoin's price

The Fed explains that its decisions affect short-term rates and subsequently financial conditions and spending choices made by households and businesses. For an investor, returns available elsewhere also play a role when choosing between assets. This transmission is not, however, a formula for calculating bitcoin's price directly.

A decision may be widely anticipated before publication. In that case, the reaction also depends on the difference between the final message and what market participants expected. Unchanged rates accompanied by firmer language may be received differently from unchanged rates leaving open the prospect of subsequent easing.

If a reduction were to be announced, the reasons that prompted the central bank to make that decision would matter just as much as the size of the reduction itself. Easing associated with lower inflation tells a different story from a response to rapid economic deterioration. These scenarios can affect risk appetite in different ways, even when the policy rate moves in the same direction.

Distinguishing rate decisions from liquidity operations

A rate change must not automatically be described as an injection of capital into cryptocurrencies. Operations involving bank reserves and the central bank's balance sheet work through specific mechanisms. To understand these operations, it is necessary to consult the announcements and data that specifically concern them, rather than deducing their existence from a headline about interest rates.

The September statement indicated the maintenance of ample bank reserves. The minutes separately detailed money-market conditions and the monitoring of reserve needs. Keeping these subjects separate helps avoid shortcuts suggesting that liquidity is mechanically directed towards risky assets.

As the October meeting approaches, useful reference points therefore include the decision itself, the assessment of inflation, indications concerning activity and financing, and then the market response. For bitcoin, this analysis will need to be compared with its own flows and liquidity. None of these elements, taken in isolation, can guarantee either an upward or a downward price movement. The decision, its stated reasons and the expectations already present in markets must all remain part of the reading.
