FAB and Komainu validate two-way digital-asset transfers into regulated custody

The Abu Dhabi bank presents the test as an operational step toward institutional financing secured by digital assets, without yet announcing a first credit transaction.

A completed round trip through regulated custody

First Abu Dhabi Bank announced on November 3, 2026 that it had transferred a portfolio of digital assets into Komainu’s custody environment and then moved it back out, with settlement described as instantaneous. The operation validates a two-way flow between FAB Global Markets’ infrastructure and the custodian. The release does not identify the assets, their value, or the network used. It therefore documents a completed operational test, not a new retail product.

Komainu is a digital-asset custodian backed by Laser Digital and Blockstream. FAB says the connection can move portfolios into and out of that custody environment while remaining integrated with its institutional setup. The bank emphasizes the technology, controls, and connectivity needed for market operations. It does not say that the assets were sold, lent, or pledged for a client during this transfer.

Collateral prepares the ground for institutional financing

The capability is ultimately intended to let a digital-asset portfolio serve as collateral. FAB specifically mentions repurchase transactions backed by those assets, commonly called repos: one party receives cash against an asset posted as security, with a commitment to repurchase it. The tested transfer is one component of that chain because collateral must be able to enter controlled custody and leave it through a verifiable process.

The commercial distinction remains important. FAB says its digital-asset financing capabilities are available to institutional clients, but also says it is still working toward its first transactions. The announcement provides no loan amount, customer name, rate, or maturity. It therefore does not establish that a digital-asset-backed repo has already been executed. The verifiable result concerns custody movement, not the financing itself.

Validated infrastructure, with key details still missing

FAB links this step to other work, including live tokenized-deposit transactions with Citi through Swift Ledger and a digitally native green bond issued on Euroclear’s D-FMI infrastructure. Those references show a broader institutional strategy, but they remain separate projects. They do not automatically establish the legal, prudential, or accounting conditions that would apply to a future digital-collateral service.

The announcement therefore provides targeted evidence of operation: assets can make a round trip between the connected FAB and Komainu systems. Assessing actual adoption will still require the accepted assets, covered jurisdictions, valuation rules, margins, counterparties, and volumes. Until first financing transactions are disclosed, this step should be understood as infrastructure activation, not the broad rollout of an institutional crypto-credit market.
